Tan Teng Boo
Tan Teng Boo, 72, is the founder and CEO of Capital Dynamics, Asia’s first independent global fund manager. Highly regarded as an avid investor, entrepreneur, and fund manager with deep rooted values of integrity, Teng Boo brings a rare dual perspective to his decision, blending deep investing skills with hands-on business experience. Under his leadership, Capital Dynamics has expanded from only Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Bandung.
His fascination with investing has led him to acquire uncanny insights into the workings of businesses, economies and equity markets. Over the decades, having researched and invested in the semiconductor ecosystem, Teng Boo has developed particular expertise in the chip sector. He conducts extensive field research, including company and factory visits, engagement with management and industry participants, and first-hand study of supply chains and business models. More recently, his research has expanded deeply into the intersection of artificial intelligence and semiconductors, including the evolving ecosystems of the United States and China.
Having a “fanatic’s” interest has resulted in the bespectacled Teng Boo developing remarkable insights. On 7 April 2007, for example, Teng Boo said at a Kuala Lumpur seminar that “Computers are birth of artificial intelligence. Unlike other inventions, for the first time in human history, the Internet allows an interaction of natural intelligence with artificial intelligence on a global scale – this is what makes its impact so dynamic, so powerful and so open-ended.” Teng Boo’s prophecy on AI was 19 years ahead of Jensen Huang’s AI 5-layer cake. To Teng Boo, the AI Revolution is more than electricity or the internet.
In September 2024, Teng Boo predicted that China would match or surpass the US in semiconductors by 2030, despite the escalating US export and advanced technology restrictions and sanctions.
Teng Boo is licensed personally by the Securities Commission Malaysia, Australian Securities & Investments Commission and Securities & Futures Commission of Hong Kong. He holds an Honours degree in Social Sciences, majoring in Economics, from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney Business School.
