“Value Investing” is the underlying theme of this pioneering international investment research competition. Value investing is a well-known, time-proven investment strategy that is used globally to identify undervalued securities, both listed and unlisted. Some of the most successful investors are value investors and these include one of the world’s richest men, Warren Buffett, and investment guru, the late Benjamin Graham.

The 2026 Budding Value Investor Award (“BVIA”) is Asia’s first and only global investment research competition organised by Capital Dynamics to encourage postgraduate, undergraduate and diploma students to acquire knowledge of value investing and the benefits it offers. The competition is sponsored by Capital Dynamics and icapital.biz Berhad, a closed-end fund listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia.

The 2026 Budding Value Investor Award consists of two stages: the Preliminary stage will take the form of an essay and investment research; the Final stage will require the finalists to present their investment research live in Kuala Lumpur in late 2026. Participants can participate individually or form a group of up to 3 team members and compete to win attractive cash prizes and rewards worth RM25,000.00. Accommodation and flight tickets will be sponsored and arranged by the Organiser for finalists from overseas.

PRELIMINARY STAGE


The Preliminary Stage requires Participants to submit a Research Paper that consists of two parts:

Part 1 (50%): Are AI and Semiconductor stocks in a bubble? Discuss.

Part 1 of your Research Paper shall not exceed 3,000 words, excluding charts, tables, references and appendices.

Part 2 (50%): Choose one company from the AI and semiconductor ecosystems, listed on any stock exchange globally, that you would recommend as a Buy or Sell from a value investing point of view. Your answer should be consistent with your analysis in Part 1.

Part 2 of your Research Paper shall not exceed 5,000 words, excluding charts, tables, references and appendices.

EVALUATION STAGE


After reviewing the submitted materials, shortlisted teams will be required to attend an evaluation stage to allow the panel to accurately assess each team's genuine, unassisted understanding. This session does not carry marks; however, it is a mandatory qualifying requirement for progression to the Finals. Teams must demonstrate a clear and sufficient understanding of their submission. Failure to do so may result in disqualification, regardless of written submission quality.

FINAL STAGE


The Final Stage is a Presentation of Part 2 of Participants’ Research Paper. Finalists will be invited to present their research to a panel of prominent judges. The Final Stage Presentation will be held physically in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late 2026. More detailed information and procedures will be disclosed to the Finalists in due course.

Registration Deadline
The registration will close on 20 September 2026, at 11.59 PM Malaysia time (GMT+8).

Research Paper Submission
All participants must submit their Research Paper by 20 September 2026, 11.59 PM Malaysia time (GMT+8) via email to bvia@icapital.biz.

Announcement of Finalists
The announcement of the Finalists for the Final Stage will be made on bvia.icapital.biz and via email at a future date (to be announced).

Final Stage Presentation
Finalists will present their research physically in Kuala Lumpur in late 2026. Further details will be shared in due course.


The Budding Value Investor Award
The Budding Value Investor Award is the highest honour in the competition, reserved for truly outstanding achievement.


Beyond the RM10,000 cash prize, the most coveted reward is an exclusive apprenticeship under Tan Teng Boo, founder and Managing Director of Capital Dynamics, Designated Person of icapital.biz Berhad, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney. With over five decades of investment experience, Teng Boo is one of Asia's most respected value investors. This apprenticeship with The Great Thinker of the East is something that can only be earned. And for those who earn it, one final reward awaits, a surprise that will only be unveiled on the day.
